THE MARBLES + DIRECTOR Q&A
Join us after the screening for a revelatory Q&A with filmmaker and Stirling 900 awardee David Wilkinson and Evdoxia Lymperi, UK Senior Correspondent, Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation.
THE MARBLES, an explosive new documentary, explores the controversial topic of artefact repatriation. The film takes an in-depth look at the story of the Parthenon marbles, which were taken from Greece by Lord Elgin during the 19th century, bought by the British government and installed at the British Museum in London, where they remain today. Greece has been lobbying for their return to the country for almost 200 years.
THE MARBLES takes a serious look at the history and the politics around this singular case and delves into the unchecked power of the British State, its class loyalties, its entitlement, the press and its pervasive influence on public life. This is not simply about a disagreement between the UK and Greece – rather more, it asks fundamental questions about nationhood, history, identity and how we come to terms with the past.
Notable participants in the documentary include actor Brian Cox, Neil Curtis (Head of Museums and Special Collections at the University of Aberdeen), Patricia Allan (Former Curator of World Cultures at Glasgow Museums) and retired businessman Tom Minogue.
