A British story of dissent, drawn from the frontlines of climate resistance. Through the experiences of those who stood in defiance, it traces the quiet unraveling of our protest rights. The film challenges audiences to question what makes dissent effective and where the line of acceptability is.
Award-winning filmmaker Liz Smith returns with a timely and urgent new documentary. The film lays bare the alarming clampdown on protest rights in the UK through the eyes of climate activists at a time of accelerating ecological crisis. The Line We Crossed offers intimate access to the lives and experiences of those on the frontlines of environmental protest, including Marcus Decker, who received a 2 year 7month sentence for climbing the QEII Bridge to raise awareness of the climate emergency, and Trudi Warner, arrested for standing silently outside a UK court holding a sign affirming the independence of juries.
At the heart of the documentary is a chilling portrait of a legal and political environment increasingly hostile to nonviolent dissent. During filming, sweeping new anti-protest laws were enacted, giving police broad powers to arrest citizens for minor disruption and enabling courts to deny activists the right to explain their motivations, imposing disproportionately harsh sentences.
Liz Smith is an award winning British documentary filmmaker. Her work is centred around human rights issues. The films she is making at Page75 Productions are the outcome of years of study on the issues driving the rise of populism and the erosion of our democratic rights. However, researching the issues can only go so far. Her approach of spending time with affected communities on the frontline delivers a much deeper understanding of the forces driving these trends.
She is the director of the feature documentary I Am Gen Z, which premiered at CPH:DOX in 2021 and won Best Feature Film at the Lower East Side Film Festival. Her most recent feature documentaries include The Conspiracists and The Line We Crossed.
The Conspiracists explores the profound and unsettling impact of conspiracy theories on individuals and society and had its world premiere at the American Documentary and Animation Festival in Palm Springs, California, in March 2025. She is currently in post-production on her next feature documentary, The Humanitarians, which examines the growing threats to the human right to asylum in Europe.PT2H40M152025-09-28Liz Smith
