THE ENCAMPMENTS + LIVE Q&A

Timely and urgent, this impressively comprehensive documentary detailing the recent 2024 Palestine solidarity campus encampments at Columbia University (and the universities that followed suit) is a testament to the power of filmmaking as an important tool in archiving the past, present and the future, as well as the weight of collective action. Depicting the students of Columbia protesting the institution's investment in the US and Israeli arms industry, and the subsequent biased American media coverage of the encampments, the film weaves together news clips, on the ground footage from protester's phones, scenes from present day Gaza and archival clips of Palestine with talking heads of key protest figures and important voices in Palestinian liberation, such as Bisan Owda, deftly placing this documentary within the wider context and history of the events in Gaza and creating a vital modern day watch. With gripping footage of the protesters’ struggle, the film shows the power of collective action in times of humanitarian crises. Featuring activist Mahmoud Khalil (the US permanent resident who the Trump administration has since moved to deport for his role in the protests despite not being charged with a crime) alongside professors, whistle-blowers and organisers, the film captures the deeper stakes of a historic moment that continues to reverberate across the globe. After the screening, we'll be holding a live Q&A with student representatives from the London encampments at the KCL and SOAS. The panel will be moderated by Toral Dixit, an award winning Producer Director/ Camera woman, and part time lecturer at the University of Westminster.DocumentaryPT2H152025-07-12
