RIPPLES OF PHYSIS + LIVE Q&A
Ripples of Physis, investigates the rich tradition and cultural significance of handprinted karakami, a decorative paper produced by the long-established Karacho company. For over 400 years, Karacho has been continuously active in creating these intricate patterns, which are used to evoke a sense of nature and timeless beauty.
Directed by photographer and filmmaker Mogi Ayako and produced by Japanese designer and artist Kawai Sanae, the film explores the meticulous process of creating karakami, where motifs are printed on paper to capture the essence of nature. These patterns are not merely decorative but hold profound connections to Japan’s cultural heritage, including historic sites such as Katsura Imperial Villa and tea rooms still used today.
Kawai’s inspiration for this documentary came from her personal encounter with karakami patterns, which she felt carried significance beyond the decorative. Her exploration led her to film various patterns, including rock carvings from Italy, Roman mosaics, indigenous Ainu patterns, and contemporary works, presenting a fascinating visual dialogue between past and present.
The film is paired with the short film INPERFECTION, the soundtrack making-of video.
The screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Sanae Kawai.DocumentaryPT2HtbcPierre-Alexis Dumas
