RAN (40th ANNIVERSARY)

Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Akira Kurosawa’s Oscar and BAFTA award-winning film Ran. One of the most important and influential filmmakers in cinematic history, Akira Kurosawa directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. His final masterpiece is Ran, a reimagining of Shakespeare’s King Lear set in feudal Japan. Ran (which translates as ‘turmoil’) tells the story of Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai), an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amongst his three sons: Taro, Jiro, and Saburo. This leads to a brutal and bloody war between the brothers for absolute power of the kingdom. At its heart, Ran is a tale of family strife. But in its execution, particularly the stunning exterior sequences and its use of colour, the film plays out on an epic scale. Ran was immediately recognised as a masterpiece upon its release and garnered numerous awards, including the Oscar for Best Costume Design and BAFTA awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Makeup.ActionPT2H40M12A2025-07-05
