LOVE... OBSESSION... MUSIC!: THE PIANO

ActOne presents: Love... Obsession... Music! Through a series of 5 events from October to December 2025, ActOne invites you to a multidisciplinary journey that explores a whirlpool of emotions -from romantic love and infatuation to longing, and obsession - through films and their soundtrack. This screening will be preceded by a live introduction that explores the intersection of melodrama, obsession, and music in the film. Join us at the lounge, after the screening, for a semi-structured discussion about the film, with free tea and coffee! Jane Campion's achingly beautiful, Cannes- and Oscar-winning masterpiece tells the story of pianist Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) and her spirited, young daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin), who, after a long trip from Scotland, are left with all their belongings, including a piano, on a New Zealand beach. Ada, who has been mute since childhood, has been sold into marriage to a local man (Sam Neill). Making little attempt to warm up to him, she soon becomes intrigued by his Maori-friendly acquaintance (Harvey Keitel), leading to tense, life-altering conflicts... THE PIANO is a masterclass on filmmaking, immaculately directed, with heartbreaking performances, stunning cinematography, and a hair-raising soundtrack by Michael Nyman, and it is best experienced in the engulfing dark of a cinema screen, where one can be fully immersed in its rugged landscapes and surrounded by the melodic sound of Nyman’s strings and keys. THE PIANO won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes in 1993, rendering Jane Campion the first female director to achieve that distinction (she will later become the first woman director to win an Oscar for Best Director, for The Power of The Dog, in 2022). The film was also nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three: Best Leading Actress (Holly Hunter), Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin) and Best Screenplay (Jane Campion) We are proud to be part of BFI FAN's new UK-wide season - Too Much: A Season of Melodrama - where audiences are invited to follow their emotions and get swept away by the big screen experience. The event is made possible with the support of the BFI Film Audience Network, funded by The National Lottery.DramaPT2H20M152025-12-02
