LA TRAVIATA
After its sold out UK premiere at ActOne, Giuseppe Verdi's filmed version of La Traviata returns for one final screening. This is not a live capture, but a new approach to delivering opera: One of opera’s most famous and beloved works out of the great opera houses and into a new light. Verdi’s opera, originally designed for a large romantic orchestra and huge chorus, is here reimagined as an intimate love story. There is a chorus, dancers, and an orchestra - none other than the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, led by Jacqueline Shave - but this version attempts to get to the bare bones of this remarkable tale. Developing the relationship between singer and camera, the audience is drawn into the heart of the piece, exploring its emotional canvas, while still honouring the wonderful, heightened, theatrical world in which Violetta and Alfredo and Germont play out their drama.
This version of LA TRAVIATA is brought to the screen by OperaGlass Works and is shot on location in the UK. Intimate, powerful and moving, this is a beautiful story of love and of loss as you have never experienced it. And if you have never seen opera before, this is for you.
Parisian courtesan, Violetta meets the romantic aristocrat Alfredo and finds herself in love for the first time. She abandons her frivolous lifestyle to be with him but his father Germont, charged by the hypocrisy of upper-class society, threatens their future. Internationally renowned baritone Roderick Williams plays Germont, and leads a magnificent and diverse cast including Susana Gaspar as Violetta and Thomas Elwin as Alfredo.
“OperaGlass Works is very likely to change the way we appreciate opera forever. And it has been created not by a group of callow hopefuls, but a team of senior practitioners in the midst of successful careers.” Arts Industry
