HAPPYEND
Neo Sora’s narrative feature debut is a startling coming-of-age portrait of a society increasingly dominated by AI surveillance and authoritarian control. Pulsing with raw energy and a hypnotic techno soundtrack, Happyend is a bold, hopeful celebration of youthful rebellion—a testament to resistance, friendship, and joy in the face of oppression.
We meet a group of charming teenage rebels who secretly pursue their passion for early electronic music. Their school – a microcosm of society with prevailing xenophobia, surveillance and authoritarianism – is disturbingly familiar. ‘Everything is done. All we can do is to discover old gems,’ captures their persuasively pessimistic nostalgia. Following his moving concert film Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, Neo Sora’s fictional debut presents a playful yet highly allegorical coming-of-age story set in a near-future Tokyo. Jam-packed with delightful cinematic details, Happyend elegantly dances across time and space.
