EYES OF GAZA + LIVE Q&A WITH DR. NIZAM MAMODE

We are extremely honoured to welcome Dr. Nizam Mamode for a Q&A after the screening, where he will speak about his experiences as a volunteer surgeon in an emergency medical team in Gaza, organised by Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) in 2024. We kindly request that any donations you were planning to make to ActOne Cinema for this event to be redirected to MAP. Please note that there will be no ads and trailers. The films will start at the advertised time. We will screen two documentaries that focus on the experiences of journalists and aid workers in Gaza: EYES OF GAZA (2024; 49 minutes; Arabic with English Subtitles; Directed by Mahmoud Atassi; Produced by Al Jazeera) Amid the relentless Israeli war on Gaza, three Palestinian journalists risk their lives to report the truth, navigating bombings, blackouts, and the constant threat of death—because in a war that spares no one, their mission must endure. More journalists have been killed over the course of a year in the Israel-Gaza war than in any other conflict since the Committee to Protect Journalists started collecting data in 1992. This hellish portrait follows three Palestinian journalists in northern Gaza as they are forced to put their lives at risk while trying to do their work. But the mission always comes first, as a seriously injured fellow journalist reports from his hospital bed. GAZA GASPING: AN AID WORKER'S FRONTLINE DIARY (2025; 12 minutes; French with English Subtitles; Produced by RTS) As Israel has pushed Gaza to the brink of famine, this brand-new report stands as a rare inside witness to the extreme deterioration of the humanitarian situation. The Gaza Strip has become the most dangerous place in the world for humanitarian workers. Among them is Sonam Dreyer-Cornut, a nurse from Valais on assignment with Doctors Without Borders in the Palestinian enclave for two months. "Ultimately, no place in Gaza is safe. The population doesn't know where to go.” Since the end of the truce, the Israeli army has been targeting health facilities in particular, which it claims are hosting Hamas activities. According to the WHO, almost all of Gaza’s hospitals are now damaged. As the blockade persists, cases of extreme malnutrition, especially among children, are increasing. "We're starting to run out of everything. Whether it's medical supplies, medicines, or medical equipment, to keep the hospitals running.” The UN has identified the use of hunger as a weapon of war as a serious violation of international humanitarian law. In her final video, just before the end of her service, Sonam’s steadfast composure breaks. All that remains are questions: “I don't understand why we continue to bomb civilians and mostly children. Who? Who? Who are they, the collateral damage of this war?” NIZAM MAMODE is a British professor of transplantation surgery. Until 2020 he was clinical lead of transplant surgery for adults and children at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and honorary consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He is best known for leading the operation that used 3D printers to plan a transplant of a living-donor kidney from a father into his two year old daughter in 2015. The following year he led the team that performed the United Kingdom's first robot-assisted kidney transplant via keyhole surgery. Mamode volunteered with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) in Gaza from mid-August to mid-September 2024, where he treated victims of Israeli drone strikes at Nasser Hospital. He testified before the UK Parliament about the deliberate targeting of civilians, especially children. Mamode described regularly operating on children who had been shot by hovering drones while lying on the ground after bombings, highlighting the severe conditions faced by children and healthcare workers in Gaza, and has written in The Guardian about his experiences.PT2H182025-09-11EYES OF GAZA + LIVE Q&A WITH DR.
