ACTON FILM CLUB PRESENTS: STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. ACCOMPANIED BY LIVE MUSIC

Together with the Acton Film Club, we are participating in The Festival of Community Cinema, a nationwide festival that celebrates 100 years since the founding of the first film society! Tickets are only £3.00 for Standard and Plus members and £3.60 for everyone else! STEAMBOAT BILL, Jr is one of Buster Keaton’s finest comedies, with brilliant gags and heart-stopping stunts, and we are proud to present it accompanied by live music from Pierre Catherine-Buffet, recreating the original experience audiences would have had when watching a silent film: When live music was a crucial part of the viewing experience and helped to create mood, provide emotional context, and enhance the narrative. ‘Steamboat Bill’ Canfield captains a dilapidated steamer from a small Mississippi town. When news comes that his estranged son (Buster Keaton) is returning home, he hopes for a strapping lad to help him with business. But Junior turns out to be a college-educated city-slicker with no sea legs. And worse, his sweetheart is the daughter of Canfield’s deadly rival – the successful, luxury riverboat owner JJ King. Junior tries and fails to win his father’s approval, until a cyclone hits and the weedy urbanite gets a chance to prove himself. Featuring some of Keaton’s finest stunts on camera and perhaps one of the most iconic scenes in all silent cinema, in which a house’s facade falls on the oblivious performer. The Acton Film Club was started in August 2009 by Mark Mason and Nick Jones after many discussions and many pints. Since then, they have screened a film every month, each preceded by a short introduction from Nick. Pierre Catherine-Buffet is an award-winning composer, arranger and pianist from France, based in London. After studying classical piano, music theory and then cinema, he turned into film composition and even directing. In August 2023, he released his first professional studio EP Album orchestrated for 29 musicians and singers, mixing funk, jazz, classical and rock songs and instrumentals.ComedyPT1H10MU2025-10-13
